Default how do i prove i dont owe money?

it's not a large sum £98.66p
i do not owe it i will not pay it, i will not pay the lesser amount they have said in the past they are 'prepared to settle for.'
i am cross.
i am a little ott when it comes to paying my bills. i always pay my bills in advance if i can. i am NEVER behind on payments.
i asked for proof that i owe this money and non was offered. the due date for payment is march 2006.
after i asked for proof of my owing the money the debt was sold on. the new collectors said they would settle for 40p in the pound. i said i do not owe it i will not pay anything.
i heard nothing for a long time untill this morning when i got a legal looking letter saying they will send baliffs round.
i know i do not owe this money but how to prove it?
the debt seems to have been sold on at least once maybe twice (i think this mornings letter is from a new company)
i dont want to pay even 10p on a debt i dont owe. i am insulted as i am very strict and go without before i would get into debt i can not pay.
the orginal 'debt' appears to be to a home catolog company who i did have an account with but i know i paid all money i owed but dont have receipts from so long ago.

sorry for being impolite....i know i havent introduced myself or said hello (HELLO EVERYONE ) but i am a little fuming....... at debt collects who say i owe money but refuse to show proof!!!!!

Have you written to the company they say you owe? I know it's a pain but telephoning doesn't carry much weight, especially with bailiffs?

hi Pete J
thank you for your reply.
the company who say i owed them money have since gone into liquidation.
the debt was then asked for i think by the receivers and now by debt collectors, i really am cross as i know i dont owe money to anyone.
do i ignore them or write or email the new people who have asked for payment. i am unemployed. what are the legal aspects of them asking for money without showing me proof. just does not make sense to me.
hey everyone reading this you owe me £10,000 pay up or i send the bailiffs round!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If they can't show you paperworks that say you indeed owe them, then you've got nothing to worry. Most of the time, it's just errors on the side. but it'll really be helpful if your can provide them proofs of your payments. In that way, both sides can compare notes and see where the problem really is.

Get everything in writing, for sure...if they don't have written proof of what they claim you owe, then they have nothing. Both myself and my partner have had collections agents attempt to make claims against us for faulty charges. We were able to stop them when we demanded proof and they could provide none.

They eventually will send around a former baliff basically warned him of impending doom, the court, etc. and then will come the real baliff, he needs to get all the paperwork etc. and that no money has nothing to prove. westcott another company bought the loan - in the past ive had dealings with them, and theyre a real pain, and caused me a lot of trouble.
