A company buys all of your credit card debt from the various lenders you owe and then you pay them back.

According to me debt consolidation means taking of one loan to pay other loans. Mostly this is to secure a lower interest rate.

you can always file bankruptcy, but this is a desperate option and is not for everybody. You will pay a lawyer the same amount or more than what you would pay for other options. Plus this does not teach you anything about managing a budget and working with what you have. This will get you out of debt, but then all the credit card companies will send you applications again because you cannot file bankruptcy again for at least 7 years. This could be dangerous.
