Default Student Loans Lost Deferment

Hi all, I'm a newbie and have just joined and urgently need some advice if posible reference Student Loan Co.
I was a student between 1995 and 1998 and took out the maximum amount in student loans over the three years.
Initially after graduation, I was earning below the threshold for a few years and managed to defer my repayments.
Then for a few halcyon years, I was earning in excess of the threshold and made repayments accordingly.
A change of job in 2005 led to me just being below the threshold again and I managed to defer.
I have been earning below the threshold ever since.
In spring 2010 I moved house and submitted my deferment form along with change of address details.
Student Loans never processed these forms and I never heard anymore and have to say that I had not given them a second thought.
Then, in May of this year, out of the blue, I was contacted by Credit Solutions, a debt colloection agency acting on behalf of Student Loans Co.
They were demanding a repayment of all arrears.
I explained my situation to them and have provided them with proof of earnings over the period to which they claim that there are arrears.
In fairness to Credit Solutions, they did refer the matter back to Student Loans Co who have advised that they still consider the account to be in arrears and are demanding repayment.
I cannot afford to pay thi amount off at all and I feel that they are acting very unfairly.
The whole episode is causing me massive stress.
Has anybody else been in a similar situation and did they manage to resolve the issue please?
I would be hugely grateful for any advice that could be given.
Thanks everyone.
