Question BIG HELP: 65 year old with 12k debt

I am trying to help my mum out as she owes 12k on cards and owns half a home with my father but doesnt want to let him know about her debt - she will get a couple of grand when she retires but it wont cover it all.

What are her options without invoving the house and my dad - can she freeze the interest or do something ? help

Hello

Are all the debts on credit cards and just in your Mms name? If any of the cards are in joint names there maybe some issues especially if your father is the main card holder.

Options would include your mother contacting the credit card companies and trying to negotiate lower interest rates alternativey she could contact a debt solution company and asking them to do this on her behalf. There are lots of companies out there who can provide this service some charge a fee and others are free. Consumer Credit Counselling Service are a charity funded by creditors alternatively you could contact Debt Advisory Line, they have won the Debt Management Provider of the year 2009 which would suggest they offer the best advice.

It's not a big thing what you state about your mother. If she didn't want to involve your father and her house then she need to just hire a debt consolidation company. They will charge only small fee and they do all on behalf of your mother.

The best place to start would be going to your citizens advice bureau where they will be able to guide you in the best place to go or give you someone to speak to. I would advise maybe going to a debt advisor and see what they say as at the end of the day debt is debt.
