What is a Debt Management Plan?

I think that A Debt Management plan is systematic way to pay down your debt. A credit counseling agency will first do a comprehensive review of your current debt situation. A Debt Management Plan (DMP) is a method used in various countries for paying personal unsecured debts. Typically, such debts are out of control -- even minimal payments are late and take too large a portion of income, or even exceed it.

A Debt Management Plan is typically an arrangement that is managed with a person's creditors through a third party. After careful assessment of the individual debt situation, income and budget, a plan will be drawn up which is in the best interest of all parties concerned.

One major advantage of debt counseling is that through a debt management plan, the multiple monthly payments of the debtor are consolidated into one payment. Often, the amount is normally less than the total of the individual payments previously paid by the debtor. The other advantage of a management program is that it offers a reduction in the interest rates charged by the creditors.

An advantage to the debtor is knowing that there is only one loan to pay off and one company to deal with, eliminating the headache of dealing with several different creditors each month.

A finance company or lender owed money can appeal to the county court to reclaim their money. However, if the borrower is in genuine difficulty the court can order repayments based on their ability to pay. This will list your debts in priority order, such as where failure to make payments would lead to the loss of your home (mortgage), an essential utility (electricity, water, etc), an essential item (such as a car you need to get to and from work) or could lead to imprisonment. The court will also take into account reasonable amounts for "essentials" for the borrower and his/her family. After all of these are taken into account, the court makes a repayment order based on the monies owed. The court will also freeze interest so that the money you owe does not increase.
