Default Statute barred?

Hi,

It has been 5 years since I made any payments to any of the companies that I owed money to, however I am still receiving debt collectors letters about some of the debts. I am now looking to take out a loan to buy a car but I am worried that because of my past history I will be declined. I am wondering how to best go about starting to 'clear my name' so to speak. Would requesting a credit report be a good place to start? How do I get these debt letters to stop since from my undertsanding all my debt should now be statute barred?

Thanks in advance for your help
